Chagdud Gonpa Foundation was founded in 1983 by H.E. Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche (1930-2002), a highly revered meditation master who taught extensively in the East and West. Through its many activities, which include offering public teachings and retreats, as well as translating and publishing texts, Chagdud Gonpa Foundation upholds and preserves the arts, philosophy, and meditation practices of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Chagdud Gonpa teachers—Lama Drimed Norbu, Tulku Jigme Rinpoche, and other lamas appointed by Chagdud Rinpoche—work to carry out Chagdud Rinpoche’s intention to provide guidance for students on the spiritual path.

Khentrul Lodrö Thayé Rinpoche has taught for many years at monasteries in Tibet and India, and is the abbot of Katog Mardo Tashi Choling in Eastern Tibet, where he established a retreat center, library, shedra (higher philosophical studies institute), and is currently building a school for the monastery's children. He directs the education and spiritual practice for over three hundred monks, of whom there are 70 advanced-degree candidates, 100 children, and 20 full time retreatants.

Khentrul Rinpoche came to the United States in September of 2003, under the invitation of His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, who requested that he start a program for studying Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and meditation in a traditional way (known as a shedra). This past fall, 2006, was the fourth successful year of the shedra program. Khentrul Rinpoche has been traveling constantly around the United States, tirelessly teaching and sharing his knowledge. Rinpoche’s style for presenting these profound and sacred teachings to Western minds is phenomenal.

Lama Orgyen Zangpo has studied the dharma under His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche for over twenty years and was ordained by him in 1996. He lives and works at Chagdud Gonpa's main center in the Trinity Alps area of California (Rigdzin Ling) and teaches throughout North America. He is managing editor of Padma Publishing and a member of the Padma Translation Committee. Known for his good heartedness and clarity, Lama Zangpo has inspired many people to the study and practice of meditation. He teaches widely in the US.

Venerable Lama Chödak Gyatso Nubpa was born in 1951 in Aninkar, Tibet, into an eminent Nyigma lineage family. His training began at the age of four at Nyendril Ling Monastery, which has since been destroyed. In 1959 Lama Gyatso's family was forced to flee Tibet. Many of his immediate family died during the perilous escape into India.

Lama Gyatso's extensive traditional and modern education and training continued in exile until the age of fifteen, when he entered the prestigious Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies. He later spent two years at the University of Delhi, studying both Eastern and Western philosophy at the postgraduate level.

From 1979 until 1990, Lama Gyatso worked closely with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Lama Gyatso served as a representative of the Nyingmapa community in exile, and subsequently served as both the Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Tibetan Congress in Exile. While serving in these respective offices, Lama Gyatso directed programs to preserve and promote Tibetan culture, religion and human rights, thus supporting the Tibetan peoples' aspiration for their national identity. Lama Gyatso came to Los Angeles in 1992 at the request of His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, and currently holds the Los Angeles seat of his center T'hondup Ling in Los Feliz.

Jigme Tromge Rinpoche is the spiritual guide of Ati Ling. The son of H.E. Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, at a young age Rinpoche was recognized by Chokling Rinpoche as his previous life’s son Tsewang Norbu, who was an emanation of Yudra Nyingpo, one of Guru Rinpoche’s twenty-five disciples. In April, 2000, he received the full cycle of the Duddul and Longsal Nyingpo lineages from Kyabje Mogtza Rinpoche, of Kat’hog Gonpa in Tibet.

Rinpoche was born in 1964 in Orissa, India, where he had the good fortune to receive a traditional Buddhist education. He has had extensive training in the teachings and practices of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and has studied with many great masters of our time including H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Khyentse Rinpoche and H.H. Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche. He also studied philosophy with Khetsun Sangpo Rinpoche and at the philosophy school of Penor Rinpoche.

Rinpoche immigrated to the United States in 1988. After completing the traditional three-year retreat under the guidance of his father, he moved to Ati Ling in 1992 and became its resident lama. Rinpoche now travels throughout North and South America and Asia giving teachings and counseling people with his gentle wisdom and warmth. As authorized by his teacher the Dzogchen master Khenpo Ngagchung of eastern Tibet, and at Chagdud Khadro's request, Jigme Rinpoche now offers Dzogchen teachings in the context of the annual retreats that Chagdud Rinpoche initiated in Brazil.

Besides the monasteries in Tibet and Nepal for which he is jointly responsible, he is the founder and director of the Padmasambhava Peace Institute, and director of the Mahakaruna Foundation, an international charitable organization founded by Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche that offers assistance to the old, sick and impoverished in various parts of Asia, and also works to preserve Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Lama Inge Zangmo, Lama Yeshe Zangmo (Inge Sandvoss) was born in Germany in 1939 and moved to the United States in 1958. In December 1980, she moved to Ashland, Oregon and stayed at Gyatrul Rinpoche's center and received Vajrakilaya empowerment and the complete teachings on generating the deity. From Chagdud Rinpoche, Inge received Red Tara and T'hroma empowerments as well as empowerments for other deities practiced by Chagdud Gonpa. She also received the complete teachings on the Dzogchen Great Perfection, including instruction in trekcho and togyal from Chagdud Rinpoche.

As resident lama of Padma Ling in Spokane, WA, Lama Inge Zangmo maintains a daily practice schedule, teaches twice a week and helps with the prison program. She also travels and teaches at various dharma centers in the United States and has taught in Germany and Nepal.

In 1977, Chagdud Khadro’s work as a writer/researcher for the New Yorker took her to India’s Himalayan region where she encountered Tibetan refugees and the international Buddhist community. She found a deep spiritual affinity with the Nyingma school of Tibetan Vajrayana and met her teacher, His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche.

They moved to the United States together where, in 1979, they were married. Throughout their relationship, Rinpoche gave Khadro constant training in the teachings and practices of Vajrayana, as well as in the organization of dharma activities. In the US, Khadro worked as the managing editor of Padma Publishing, printer of dharma texts for the Chagdud Gonpa Foundation. Rinpoche, Khadro, and several other writer/editors collaborated on his autobiography, Lord of the Dance. With his guidance, she also compiled commentaries of his teachings on Ngondro, P’howa, and Red Tara.

Finding a growing interest in Buddhism in Latin America, Rinpoche and Khadro moved to Brazil in 1995 to establish Khadro Ling, which is the base of Chagdud Gonpa Brasil’s more than twenty regional centers. In 1997, after Khadro was ordained as a lama, Rinpoche invested her as the future Spiritual Director of Chagdud Gonpa Brasil and Chagdud Gonpa Hispanoamerica.

Since Rinpoche’s Parinirvana in 2002, Khadro has traveled throughout the Americas, Europe, and Australia teaching and giving empowerments. She teaches on a wide range of practices and subjects, and has a special focus on P’howa, the transference of consciousness at the moment of death. Her teachings are known for their clear and relevant guidance. At home in southern Brazil, Khadro's main recent project has been the construction of a Zangdog Palri, “Glorious Copper Mountain”, Guru Rinpoche’s Pureland. Its consecration by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and other masters in December 2008, fulfilled a great aspiration of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche.

Born in Golog, Tibet, Rinpoche has studied and meditated under many great masters. He has maintained the lifestyle of an ascetic, meaning one free from worldly concerns and activities. He does not keep a place of residence but chooses to wander, traveling in Nepal, Bhutan, India, and many other countries.

Rinpoche shares a close relationship with the Dalai Lama and currently travels the world over, engaging in beneficial activities. Rinpoche comes from the Nyingma lineage in Tibet and is one of five major reincarnate masters called "the Five Golden Throne Holders" who oversee the main monastery in Tibet. Of these masters, Rinpoche has been recognized as the fourth incarnation of the great pandita scholar, pure upholder of vows, and accomplished siddha, Wangchug Getse Mahapandita.
